I generally follow the rule of moderation, except of course for sugar which I have banished from my household after it caused such massive grief. But paneer is one of my vices. I could eat a block of paneer with salt and pepper in a single sitting. Maybe with a little cayenne pepper to add a little kick. I really could. For those who are scratching their heads, paneer is the absolute best part of milk. You start with super fatty whole milk. And then you curdle it to separate the milk solids (aka – milk fats) from the watery liquid. THEN, you proceed to drip out the last remaining bits of liquid because really, it just gets in the way of the good stuff. THAT my friends is paneer. Pure, unadulterated milk fats. Yum.

Green Beans and Carrot Subzi

You know the typical grandmothers. They bend over backwards to make their grandkids smile. I know grandmothers who travel hundreds of miles to get that best gift for the kid. I know grandmothers who choose a larger car — so that the kids can have a place to sit when they visit those few times a year. I know grandmothers who will learn a new language in their golden years so that they can communicate better with their grandkids. I know grandmothers who will create a storm of cooking in the kitchen at every whim of the kid. I know grandmothers who will scold the kid’s parents for being “too hard”.

Since I have zero experience in being a grandmother I really can’t tell you what makes them do this. It’s odd – but boy do I relish in this love!

Punjabi Kadhi with Pakoras

On August 5th a tragic shooting occurred in Wisconsin, US. For those of you who don’t live in the US, a Sikh temple was attacked and 6 Sikhs were shot and killed. It reminded me again of how fragile our world is. In what probably felt like an eternity for the victims, but in actuality just few minutes, lives were taken. Lives of loved ones. Lives.

The Sikhs as a community are one of the most loyal and jovial people I’ve ever come across. I’ve known many Sikhs in my life and every interaction with any one of them has left me smiling. I still remember the first Sikh I ever really interacted with. She was a girl in my 5th grade class in southern California. I was amazed with her thick hair that flowed down past her waist. At the time I had no clue of how to deal with hair even longer than my shoulders. Heh, I still remember asking her how in the world she managed it. The answer – pretty much she just could and thought of no reason why I couldn’t do the same.

Sikhism, the religion of Sikhs and the temple that was attacked has it’s origin in 15th century Punjab (now the state of Punjab in India and Pakistan). As most religions, you can find people practicing Sikhism all over the world. However, India still has the largest population of Sikhs followed by UK, Canada and the United States.

Sugar Free Sandesh

The older I get, the more I realize what sacrifices my mom made while I was growing up. If I had to describe what she did in a sentence she pretty much walked in snow, up hill, both ways while dragging the entire kid crew along on a sled. Heh.

I’m seriously not kidding. I’m amazed at how she managed to work full time at least 6 days a week (often 7) taking public transportation to get there. Raised 3 kids. Made sure we were enrolled in the best school possible. Made sure we were enrolled in plenty of extra circular activities. Cooked home made food practically every night. And always with a smile on her face. And always with the attitude that she could always squeeze in time to help someone else. I honestly don’t appreciate her enough but I do think of this once in a while and I’m just shocked and in awe. She was my age when she was already doing all this, but when I grow up, I hope I measure up somewhat.
